My wife and I were cleaning out our storage room in the basement after 20 years. We’ve lived in this house 25 years and we don’t have a lot of junk. As a matter of fact, we probably have less than any family you’ve ever seen. But the room was starting to pile up with misc things. When you have kids it makes it fill up even faster. Every piece of art she ever did. Every toy. We already did that clean up when she hit 16 but we’re down to good enough quality toys for the Grandkids and mementos.
Truth be told, I’m the packrat. I have every ID, every concert ticket. Every fraternity T-shirt. My beer can collection from when I was 5 (500 plus cans). Where I am going with this is I found a credit card statement that had $3K in gambling bets on it from the late 90s. I kept it to remind me of where I used to be. I used to think I had a gambling addiction. I would bet online and the only way to get money in an account was through a credit card. I got in over my head and thought I could use the credit card line to get me out. What ended up happening is very typical, the interest rate made it so I could never get out and I had gotten to a point where it was going to take me forever to pay the $3K back at 40% interest. Yes, 40% is what a credit card can be.
Not a gambling problem? I didn’t. I had no yearn to gamble. I actually had a “I need extra money” problem and sports betting was all I knew. I hadn’t gotten into blogging or domain investing yet. Online had just started and I used it to sell a few toys online and place bets. I hadn’t found the real opportunity yet. Once I got down I couldn’t get out. I had no desire to bet every day but I had to. Or at least I thought I had to so I could get my money back. I finally realized I couldn’t and talked to my new wife about it. Obviously, she was mad, told her whole family about my “addiction” and I looked like a fool. Deservedly. I was acting foolish. She paid the bill out of our savings and I promised to pay her back. Like all credit card debt or people in deep financial trouble say. But I did pay her back. It just took a while.
I found ways to make money that didn’t require risking money but rather investing time. I look at that credit card bill to remind myself that my path was not always straight. That I’m not addicted to gambling but to action. I need to be making money all the time. Something has to be creating revenue 24 hrs a day. Fortunately, I have found more healthy ways of achieving this. Better for me and the family. Also more lucrative.
25 years later I make more than that $3K on many days and have put the family in a pretty good spot. Her and I. For a while it looked like I was going to be only a liability. Fortunately, I matured into an asset and not an ass.
