I don’t do a lot of funding for companies, but I have written checks for four or five. I don’t expect returns on any of them. I invested because the team and the other investors are the kind of people I want to be around. The value for me isn’t just financial—it’s about learning and building relationships that will bring far greater returns than the $5K–$10K I spent.
My first-ever checks were alongside Fred Wilson, Mark Pincus, and Howard Lindzon. Watching them in action was an incredible learning experience. Now, I’m involved in several companies with great thought leaders. One of my recent investments is Receipts.xyz, an exercise/running app (which you should sign up for) that lets users trade their data with companies. You don’t have to participate, but consider this—Strava sells your data for billions. Why should they get all that for free? And why should you have to pay them for the privilege?
Beyond liking the people involved, I invest in business models that intrigue me. Being on the “inside” makes me a better businessperson—I get to see what SaaS tools they use, where the burn is, and why it exists. Surprisingly, I’ve exited most of my investments, even though I never expected to. That’s just a bonus.
