Investments are worldwide, yet most US consumers only trade US stocks. This is largely because global markets feel accessible only to those “in the know.” In reality, it is as simple as opening a Schwab Global account; if you already have a standard account, you simply fill out an additional form.
I understand that 99% of people put their money into the S&P 500 and forget it, but those who want a “set it and forget it” strategy can also do so in Canada, Europe, and Asia via a small basket of large or emerging companies. While there is plenty of growth in the US, there is exponential growth happening around the world. We now play on a global stage, so our money should as well. Is it riskier? Perhaps. However, playing OTC tracking stocks is even worse due to terrible liquidity and pricing. While that might not matter to a long-term holder, it matters for execution.
None of what I say is financial advice. This is my diary, a diary that is all over the board, but containing some valuable tidbits of info mixed in with the endless drivel.
What brought me to this is the realization that there are a ton of small electronic companies supplying parts to the household names we see every day. The big players with hundreds of millions in research budget already know this. A Bloomberg Terminal costs roughly $25,000, but the supplier bubble charts it provides are incredible; you can easily make that investment back in a year. People have no problem putting $25,000 into domain names for a potential 10x return over a decade. I believe those returns can be beaten in the stock market—but you don’t have to choose. You can do both.
