Writing something every single day for 17 years is tough. In order to write, you have to not write — meaning you have to get out and experience things that give you something to write about. A ton of our daily lives aren’t a good story, but if you dig deep or pay attention to the little things, there are actually stories in everything we do.
The other day I ordered a 560-pound drum of honey. It is literally my wife’s worst nightmare — a barrel of honey sitting in our garage. I already have a honey room with 100 buckets of honey, but to get this special flavor, I had to order a drum. Her first response was, “This is the koi pond in the basement all over again.”
I had completely forgotten about the koi pond — but she hadn’t. I once had the bright idea to build an above-ground fish breeding pond in our basement. The only issue was my filtration and pump weren’t strong enough to keep the water clean, so I had to change it out, ten gallons at a time, just to keep up. The basement smelled like fish, and the moisture from the pond was eventually going to lead to mold. The peak was when the fish started trying to jump out — meaning the water wasn’t good enough and they were trying to escape. Or as my wife put it, they were trying to kill themselves quickly before dying a slow death.
It didn’t go well — and of course, she was the one down there cleaning it because I worked all day. She sees this honey thing going the same direction.
I really do need to move into a warehouse, but I’m not ready to make that commitment yet. I joked with her that I bought a townhouse to run the honey company out of. She knew I was kidding… but with my crazy antics, she’s never quite sure if I’m joking or not.
