I was driving home with my wife and dog after being away for a month. I drive most of the way, but I always need a few hours’ break to relax and maybe get a little work done. The running joke is that I always give my wife the hardest two hours of each drive.
When we go to Colorado, the toughest parts are the winds of Oklahoma or the snow in the mountains. When we head to North Carolina, it’s the mountains and the winding roads. So this time, I said I’d take the mountain portion and get us through a couple of the bigger cities, then hand it off to her once we hit the open roads of the Midwest.
I get her to the “easiest” part, we gas up, and we switch drivers. About 30 minutes in, the phone vibrates and starts talking: “Tornado warning — get out of your car and find a secure place.” The wind had definitely picked up out of nowhere. And as someone whose house has been hit by a tornado before, I recognized that eerie, strange sky.
I checked the map — we were literally in the eye of the storm. It wasn’t a big front or anything; we were right in the center of what looked like a bowtie formation. To the left and right of us, tornadoes were touching down. But if we could just get through the next three miles, we’d be in clear skies.
So she white-knuckled it, turned on the hazards, and I kept my eyes on the skies, scouting for funnels. We made it through just fine, but the area ahead of us had clearly been hit hard. The highway was closed for some reason, so we had to finish the last 20 miles on side roads. It didn’t look like a direct tornado hit, but there were lots of downed trees and damaged structures. That said, I’ve lived through a tornado — they usually leave a lot more destruction.
When we finally got through it all, my wife looked at me and said, “Once again, I get the worst part of the trip.”
