Domain Spotlight:

Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Monday, May 11th, 2026

I’ve been paying a lot more attention to the monetization of the domain name industry lately, specifically regarding registrars rather than parking or individual domain owners. Currently, the registration of domain names is a 1.7% growth industry. When it comes to scaling, that is abysmal; it’s likely among the lowest growth rates of any “tech” sector in the world.

Actual growth has shifted toward complementary services: site building, email hosting, trademarks, and anything else involved in starting a new venture. Registrars often get the first shot, or at least an early shot, at capturing new and expanding businesses. The issue recently, however, is the growing list of competitors offering similar services that are often cheaper, better, or both.

GoDaddy fueled its growth through acquisitions, buying up companies that had solid customer bases and specialized in singular niches. The problem arose when new competitors popped up without adding much unique value, causing those large purchases to devalue quickly. Consequently, the competitive advantage became concentrated in the aftermarket, where margins and profits remain huge.

Presently, that’s really the extent of it. The total market is a zero-sum game; when a company enters the market, whatever share they take is simply subtracted from someone else. Most “new” developments are just built on top of existing players. Again, if something is “new,” it is merely shifting market share rather than expanding the pie.

Don’t get me wrong: the Total Addressable Market (TAM) is massive, but investors are looking for growth. The VC acquisition of Namecheap was driven by margins and the prospect of growth, growth fueled by siphoning registrations and aftermarket sales away from GoDaddy, combined with that baseline 1.7% market increase. Namecheap has done exactly that, as has Dynadot. Even Unstoppable Domains just hit 1 million names under management, domains that likely would have been registered elsewhere.

I think anyone in the field would agree the industry is hyper-competitive. If you stand still, you get scavenged. I absolutely love this business, but entering this specific space is cutthroat. That being said, there is undoubtedly room for anyone who can modernize the workflow. Uniregistry did exactly that, and many domain investors still claim it was the best interface ever created, which is wild, considering GoDaddy purchased them. Everyone assumed GoDaddy would adopt that UI, but they never did, opting instead to stick with the outdated, clunky system they still use today.

I believe 2026–27 will be a big period for improvements. DNX will be entering the fray, though they will face the same uphill battles. There are also a few unannounced “headless” registrars on the horizon. It’s going to be fun to watch.
