Yesterday I took a verbal beating. The winter was tough in Illinois, officially the coldest on record. And it killed a lot of plants. I guarantee everything I plant 100% for 5 years. I guarantee everything anyone else plants 50%. I can’t control where or how they planted it so I split the liability. That was not good enough for several people and they weren’t happy. I was called names, cursed, and treated like less than a human being by several people. But I smile, try and explain our policy and most of all, stay consistent. I have being doing retail for 20 years, so when I have the grumpies come in and berate me in our store I know how to handle it. I want to say more but I don’t. I listen intently and try and defuse the situation. I also read their spouses body language. If they come closer and join in, I know that they are there to put up a fight. If the partner holds their heads down and keeps stepping away I know that this is a common scene and they want no part of it. I hit these people a little harder. Of the 4 people that were beyond rude I actually had 2 come back and give me a 15 minute apology. It made me feel better but still draining. A third emailed me and apologized. The fourth will be coming back. Because they were so rude and insisted on a check. I gave them one but didn’t sign it. I figure they were being so rude and embarrassed themselves so much that they won’t come back to get the signature. And to top the day off I had the trucking company I use call to bitch that they broke off a mudflap at our job. I order fricken a semi a day of stone and they bitch about a mudflap. It’s one thing for a customer I buy from to complain but I don’t take kindly to a vendor or supplier. I took enough of a beating, I don’t need to take it from a person we spend $50,000 with every year. But of course, the daughter and wife were at home with smiles and hugs and didn’t even yell at me when I put dirty dishes in a clean dishwasher. Hoping today will be better. Here are today’s names.
