I’ve given the talk probably 50 times this month. Trying to explain why something has value. My answer is because people want it to have value. There doesn’t have to be anything that actualy makes it valuable in the physical or use sense. It merely has to be perecieved as valuable. Anything collectible that isn’t an actual signature or touched by the originator has to have perceived value. It doesn’t matter that Mikey Mantle’s first card has 5 of them. Its still an old piece of paper that isn’t from him, touched by him, or originate in any way from him. It’s merely a piece of paper with his picture and some stats. But people loved him and it represents something to them. That’s all it takes. Throw in a few sales and Boom. Value.
It’s much easier to explain when there is use. A car, a domain, even a watch. But even those can have astronomical value because of something unique or special that goes above any real use value. It represents something. Art is a perfect example of perceived value. Some of the most valuable pieces of art are nothing in terms of talent. Banksy isn’t a great artist in the sense of skills. He has other gifts. Norman Rockwell on the other hand had once in a lifetime artistic ability. But who and what becomes valuable is a constant ebb and flow. Trying to catch that flow has always been my goal. Sometimes I do, most times I don’t. But I am better than 99% of people. My latest flow is NFT art. I find it so interesting. I find the whole market interesting. I certainly won’t be spending big money but I will be doing some research over the winter to learn more about it.
Obviously all this started with bitcoin and crypto moves yesterday. I have been all over the board with it. I’m in pretty good but only because I sold a few domains for crypto and left it. It got me in for six figures by chance. Just happened to get them all sold right before crypto kicked it. Now everyone is back asking why its valuable. My answer. Because people think it is and my feeling is more people will feel this way every year.

What you’re seeing with crypto is that even large institutions see this as the ultimate hedge against the decline (or even collapse) of the USD.
But one key reason why Bitcoin and (especially) Ethereum will continue to climb is because when you own these cryptocurrencies, what you really own is a piece of a platform that is/are among the most secure on earth – and will continue to get more robust each and every day. So, you essentially own ‘shares’ in those platforms.
And, over time, new and wonderful use-cases will start to emerge on those platforms – Ethereum, in particular, as ‘the world’s computer.’
So while these may not qualify as “usual assets” (per your question), Shane, you’re definitely in the ‘right place’ at this point.
But only thing that’s going to be more valuable than the shares/coins is the underlying brands, themselves (and the associated IP).
