Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Friday, December 18th, 2020

We’ve had quite a few restaurants close in our town. It’s been rough for all of them but its been especially rough for the places with bad food or no financial savings. I feel bad for anyone that has been hurt by the pandemic but the restaurant business has been a tough business for over a century. There’s a reason why the tell pro sports stars to avoid investing in bars and restaurants. It’s an easy way to lose money.

We had a popular pizza place close down. A pizza place. Is there any more resilient restaurant than a pizza place? It is made for COVID. But this pizza place had bad pizza. It advertised its way in to staying open. We had another bar and grill fail. It was mediocre beer and mediocre food. It only survived because it was pretty much the only restaurant in that area of town. A wealthy suburb near Champaign. The other microbrewery switched to bottling and canning and used the sales to hold on. But its great beer. The owners are younger and great business people. Not this place. And to show what kind of people they are, when they announced their closing the gave a big fuck you to everyone by hosting large gathering, including the local Republican meeting with many people not wearing masks and way more people that are legally allowed to gather.

They figured they would take in a little cash at the end and if they got closed down they were going to close anyway. We also have two local businesses defying closing. They have been closed by the Health Department for serving food indoors but they keep doing it anyway. Saying they will have to be served a court order to close, not the health department. It hasn’t been served so packed with customers they are. And those customers? Exactly who you think. White working people. Unfortunately many older.

Again, I don’t wish financial problems on anyone but business owners have responsibilities. They also have risk. This year just happen to pile on the risk. I’ve watched some places pivot and either hold on or even do well. The places that were heavy on dine in and take your time to eat places have done less well. The common trait of the successful restaurants have been good food and owners that are figuring out how to get it in the hands of their patrons. The common trait of the failures, bad food, doing nothing different and trying to wait it out, and/or financial issues before Covid.
