Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Monday November 5th, 2018

This weekend was one of the better weekend I’ve had in years.   As I’ve mentioned a million times here and on social media, I am a runner.   I run because it keeps me healthy, I’m decent at it, and I love the social aspect.  Runners tend to be driven people and I like being around driven people.   Over the last 10 years of running my running partners have become my best friends.  Unfortunately most have moved to other cities.  But they all decided to fly in to run the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon.   We chose that race because its flat and fast and the weather is always perfect.  This year was no different.  A perfect 40 degrees with no wind.

They came in from Seattle, Austin, The Netherlands, and cities in Illinois.  Keep in mind that everyone is over 40 and one is 58, but all of us are good age groupers, meaning that most of us come in the top 20 in our age group for the large races.  We have all been running long enough to know that a race can go a lot of ways and more often than not it doesn’t go as planned.  Having such talented running partners puts a little pressure on us because none of us want to be the guy that bombs and everyone feels sorry for.  You feel bad because you know how much work we go through to get in shape.  Getting up 6 days a week at 4 am for 5 months to brave the weather and darkness in an effort to train the body to run fast for 3 hours.  Hundreds of hours of effort.   And we’re only getting older

But yet after all these years we are all still getting faster and all had great days.  I ran 3:07, my local training partner broke 3 hours at 2:58, and even the 58 year old beat me by 4 seconds, coming in 3rd in his age group.  Everyone ran close to their best.  We all celebrated by coming to my house and watching Alabama play LSU and had pizza and drank beer all night talking about the race and life.  It was like a bunch of teenagers laughing and having fun after winning the state championship or something.   It’s such a great feeling to have as a 49 year old guy and not something I take for granted.  Being able to still compete in some sport and have a great group of friends for 10 years plus.

The one common trait we all have is hard working.  All 6 of us put in the work.  Nobody complains about rain, the cold, the heat, the fact we have to head right to work, that we families, or any of the million excuses you could make as to why you can’t do it or why you’re slow.  I get so tired of people saying “I had injury X when I was younger and now I can’t” .   I broke my  neck, one person has a terrible back that he has to work on daily, the 58 year old just had meniscus surgery and barely was able to break 8:30 on runs while he rehabbed and trained to get back in shape.   I say this.  If you really want to do something you will absolutely find a way to do it.   If you have something you want to go to you make time.  Take off work, have someone take your responsibilities.  Whatever it takes to go.   Your wife asks you to go to something and immediately you can’t get off work.  All the things you made happen to get what you really wanted to do are now all of a sudden not doable.

I’m not saying that I or anyone in our group is better than anyone else.  What I am saying is running fast is something that all of us have chosen as important.  And we all did what was necessary to do to make it happen.   Often with the support of others.  It’s next to impossible to get up at 4:15 without knowing someone is  waiting for you. And if you don’t show up they would have to train alone.  It’s amazing what can happen when everyone is working towards the same goal.

The race could have gone poorly and it still would have been a fantastic weekend because I truly enjoy the journey as much as the end result.  The race is the celebration.  Even if that celebration means walking a few miles and limping home.  Eventually you’ll compare notes with your friends and celebrate those that did well and try and figure out how the next race will be better for those that didn’t.  But nothing happens for few weeks.  I’m tired.  It might have been a good race but I’m still old.   Here are today’s names.  Click through to see the current price

  1. One of my favorite things after a race is sitting around with my family and friends eating dinner and talking about how my wife beat my time again. I’m 54 with a broken disk in my back – no excuses
