I get the headline alerts from TheDomains.com, and stopped over to read Raymond’s article titled “ That’s a swift kick to the nads”. Great title by the way, who isn’t morbidly curious about a good nad kicking? Anyway, the post is about a new member on namepros that got an erroneous “Your Premium listing has sold” email from Godaddy. The domain was GLOBALHEMPSOCIETY.COM.
If I understand it right, apparently the seller changed the price to $99,999 but the system didn’t update the whole way and the customer actual bought the domain for the original listing price not the $99,999. Due to a glitch in the system, the email reported the updated price.
I don’t want to get in the weeds about Godaddy and their products, or even talk about the fact that the only reason it sold was because the price was not just shy of $100K.
Selling domains is the only thing I know of where sale like this might be possible, handreg a name and sell it for something crazy soon after. The point I want to make is that I think this is a terrible strategy for actually selling domains. This is playing the lottery, probably with worse odds depending on the name quality, and will discourage most domainers out of the business. You see it all the time, unrealistic prices for mediocre to poor domains. It’s worse when the seller is trying to get a crazy price selling their reg fee domain to other domainers.
I just don’t think it’s a sustainable strategy and I would advise any new investor to stay away from it. Price your domains, especially these type, at a reasonable level, or better yet, just below reasonable. Then buy more names and sell them.
These types of names aren’t the ones that will only be on the market once and then they’re gone forever, they will always be around in some form or another, waiting for the right buyer to see it in the registration path and buy it.
Here’s a short list of names listed for $99,999 on Godaddy, They’re better the domain you hand regged and have listed for the same price.
