I’m taking Josh’s place today because he had a little Internet problems at work. You don’t think about Internet speed until yours goes to shit. Then you realize all the things you do in life that involve network speeds. At the nursery , we are way out in the country and getting good Internet has always been a problem. We were fortunate to find a company that specializes in high speed that let us have free internet if we let them use our tower. Back in 80s we had installed a huge tower when all our trucks and people were connected via CB. We could communicate within 30 miles of that tower. And we used it every day, all day. There were no cell phones and we had calling every time on a pay phone wasn’t practical. We would go into the trucks and call “Truck A to base, Truck A to base” We would also have a code that would let the other side that a customer was in ear shot.

Things have certainly changed and its almost to the point that even our phone hotspots have 100 m/s second speeds. Not quite there but will in the next few years. We are also now able to get 1 gig per second wireless at the nursery . There is in an even bigger tower that direct feeds from the main hub in town and then we are installing fiber direct to all our shops and main building. Now I can security cameras live and I can see the status of all my greenhouses on my phone. Before I was running relays and misc stuff that was spotty at best. Pretty soon I will essentially be able to do anything I want instantly. Which is a huge contrast to waiting for 15 minutes to upload the latest catalog to the main servers because our download speed was OK but our upload speed was essentially nothing.
