Escrow.com

For the last 20 years I’ve told everyone I wouldn’t live in Florida because it’s God’s waiting room. It’s where people go to die. Especially in the Naples area. I had been a few times but only to help my Grandfather fly his plane to Ft. Myers or help him with a task. My grandfather lived in an airport community and we could fly out of our place here in Central IL and literally pull right into the garage/hanger at the airpark he lived in. He’s 95 and hasn’t flown for a while so I haven’t gone down in years despite my Dad living here in the winters. I also didn’t keep taking flying lessons so I’m merely a passenger now. But things have changed but more likely its me. I have always known that every city has its own personality and types of residents. I think I just didn’t want to get old and everyone I knew that was moving to Florida was just out of college or retiring. And I was neither.

My daughter needed to get her car to Syracuse and the weather looked good so we drove together from Illinois to NY. I dropped her off and I took a quick trip down to Florida to see my Dad. I planned on getting in and out and just surprising him for our weekly visit. Since my Dad had a heart attack I’ve come to his house to spend a few hours with him every Tuesday since. He came down to Naples for the winter and I thought it would be good to show up at his door and say “Man, it takes a lot longer to come see you on Tuesdays now”

Now that I’m older, Naples doesn’t feel quite as old. Maybe I watch Rick Schwartz enough on Twitter I was prepared for the people that live here. (Yes this is a joke and I realize he doesn’t live in Naples. But there are a lot of people that resemble him down here) I probably enjoyed Florida so much more because I’m closing in on the age when you retire and head down here. The one thing I really enjoy in Naples are all the toys. A lot of people have done well and the cars, the jets, and the homes are pretty spectacular. Yesterday I went and visited the Collier collection of cars at the Reves museum and it was just amazing. Hundred million dollars plus worth of historic cars. I got a peak at a few guys’ smaller collections of Porsches and Ferarris as well. I can see why my great grandfather, grandfather and Father all live here in the winter. It’s a collection of guys just like him with all their “stuff” and great weather.

The nursery business is hard work with lots of dirt under your nails but it can be a good living. It helps that my family has been here since the 50s and the property was a little cheaper then. Pretty sure the oceanfront homes go for a little more than 40K now. Just like early domain buying. The difference is I still live a dot net lifestyle while I’m in town and stay in just a smaller condo. It’s really all I need to just be around the fancy cars and homes. I stay a night or two, get a little motivation to make money, enjoy some sun, and head home. I plan on doing it off and on all winter. Twenty years later I COULD move here in the winters compared to the definitely not of before. Maybe in 10 years that will change again.
