IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Saturday, August 1st

Escrow.com

I sold a name at Uni the other day. I had just transferred the name somewhere so I wasn’t able to transfer the name directly to them. As I was pushing the name into the “Uni’s” holding account, AKA Afternic, I was reminded of Godaddy’s increasingly successful campaign for world domination.

And I thought to myself, “Self WTH is this happening?”

That wasn’t a thought derived from any loathing or dislike of Godaddy, but simply the base question of “why”? Why are they taking over the world?

It’s not their tools or products, while not horrible, many registrars have had far better for a long time, though the case could be made that their expired auctions system, while not a domainer helpful innovation, certainly has helped them become more and more successful.

It’s not the name they chose in and of itself. From a domainer or domain broker’s perspective, registrars like Domain.com, Name.com, even Moniker.com should be leading the industry, based on the value and relevancy of their root domain to this business.

So that leaves us, in my mind anyway, with Branding, effective marketing, targeted risk taking and rampant expansion by key acquisition.

Like it or not, a short memorable brand, backed by a large marketing budget, has outdone all the other “super”, “ultra”, “premium”, “category killer” keyword domains.

  1. Speaking of Godaddy pushing forward, (and leaving their dinosaur bug-infested website behind). This new transfer system – “push” “move to another account” USED to be so easy! It would take minutes. Now, fully 50% of the time, they fail, and it takes days now and often phone calls from buyer and seller, and or cancel and restarts to get it done.

I have sold about 40 names over the last 6 weeks, and have had about 10 of them go through slowly but without problems, about 30 took restarts or phone calls. I have eight that are still hung up and need more calls. They say they hope to get it fixed within a few weeks.

Just a head’s up. Why in the world can’t they spend a few pennies and work out their issues???
