Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Friday, June 18th, 2021

I had customer service moment yesterday that really tells you about who you are in the customer service world. I had a customer return a statue. A little girl holding out her skirt and it was meant to be a birdfeeder. I assumed she was returning it because she gifted it to someone who didn’t want it or for some reason had second thoughts. She returned it because it had a chip. I looked at it and sure enough, it had a big gash. I asked here if it had it when she got it and she said she didn’t notice it when she bought it but she noticed it now. I could tell she really didn’t like being questioned about it. I took a picture of it. I didn’t take it because I needed but because I wanted to stay in front of her longer. The little fun and games made her more upset.

Here’s where the divide comes. A good customer service person would have let it slide and let her return with no hassles and be on her way. The customer is always right attitude. But I had an issue. I was the one that helped her pick it out. I chose between to that were available and went over the choices several times. It was chipless when I loaded it. Also the chip was fresh. You could see the sharp edges where it had been damaged. I went the wrong direction. “You sure it didn’t get damaged in your car because you and I picked it out together” I said. She was furious. “We did but some other kid loaded it and I don’t know what happened”

I told the girls at the counter to refund her money and left calmly. She told the girls she was never coming back to the nursery again and didn’t appreciate it. What she didn’t like was the way I made her feel. What she didn’t mind was lying. Both of us were wrong. Mine is a situation that can be adjusted. Hers is an ethical problem that will plague here a lifetime. In a sense she is stealing from the nursery. If she would have been honest I would have worked with her. My feeling is that isn’t the customer we want and there would have been other problems down the road. I also know that 99% of the time they come back. Because we have the best plants and produt in town. I have been told off by a dozen people. Publicly and they cursed at me in front of others. All of them come to the nursery several times a year and act like it never happened. I don’t forget how they made me feel much like the lady won’t forget how I made her feel. The difference is I am responsible and accountable for my actions and can deal with the repercutions. I don’t need to lie to fix things.

Would you have done the same things with the same information ?
