So I went down a bad rabbit hole of Sim Swapping. I person let me know that a person I had been interacting with was a known Sim Swapper and to be careful. Fortunately it was a few DMs of a few sentences so it wasn’t any type of interaction or information shared that made me any more vulnerable that I already am.
But then I got to looking at how good my security was for all my assets and information. For my crypto its pretty good. One hot wallet with nothing super valuable in it and 3 cold wallets that are not accessible online. I also was using Google Authenticator which evidently is not as safe as it sounds so I moved almost everything over to Authy and locked it down so it can’t be transferred. Removed MetaMask from my phone and all bank accounts are password, face ID, and Authy. There are still some holes like my keychain on my Mac that has my passwords but they are at least behind my fingerprint. There are a bunch of password managers that could be better than what I’m doing I know.
Most people are going for your crypto. Sim swap your phone and steal all your crypto and NFTs. The second thing is your emails, social accounts, and newsletters. They want to have a trusted source’s account and send out something that has a link that steals. People with big crypto type followings are the biggest targets. So how do they SIM Swap?
It’s pretty basic. They call your provider and tell them they are switching to a new phone and have everything ported over to their phone which basically is your old phone in a perfect copy now in their possession. All texts, emails, passwords, metamask etc in their control. The carriers all have PINs and security questions set up but they are only as strong as the people working. Good employees insist they are done 100% correct. Low quality employees get lazy and just do it thinking 99.9% of the people that need to move are legit. I was told that AT&T is very strict and has the best security and Verizon is one of the worst because their hiring practices have gotten sloppy and they are just taking bodies. I can’t verify the Verizon part but I can tell you that testing ATT to see if they would give me info without know my security answers. They wouldn’t. The only thing I could get without passwords was my PUK code for my SIM. Why did I need a PUK code
So I was putting a PIN number on my SIM so if someone switched phones they would have to put in the PIN. Meaning if I dropped my phone or had it stolen they could pull my SIM but they could dupe my phone. Problem was I put in the wrong password 3 times while messing with it and it locked my SIM and only your carrier can give you the PUK code to unlock it. If you put that in wrong 10 times it bricks the SIM and you have to go get a new one. That I was able to get in my account by getting into my account and putting in my phone info. So they would have to know my password to my account and have my phone. I probably caused my work that problems I am actually going to have.
My security is still not perfect but I am trying every day to improve it a little without making it difficult to do my daily work. I put a little work in each day improving things. The reality is we are always vulnerable is someone wants to go after you. You just have to make it harder for them and to spread your assets around. You hope that you’ll have no losses but if your’e in crypto it will happen because you will be careless and moving fast. You also get some incredible deals through trust of people and lose money through that same trust. Just have to have the the winners pay for all the losers on the trust ratio like in domains
