Escrow.com

When I used to trade I was surrounded by crazy. I came straight from college to the floor and it made my fraternity house look like a monastery. I have never seen a group of people that were fearless of risk. They would side gamble more than I was making as a clerk. They were so driven by money that they thought about it day and night. They couldn’t stop gambling. Everything had odds. I couldn’t walk to the train with them without them thinking about how to make money on it. Not build a business type ideas but odds. I bet you this happens or that happens.

We had a March Madness contest where anyone could enter. You buy a team and each round paid out a certain percentage of the pot with each round getting a bigger payout. Obviously the best teams went for the highest price. It went around the board by brackets. I went hoping to get Alabama for cheap since they were like a 13 or 14 seed. $8K. Eight thousand dollars for a shitty team. I was way out of my league. Duke ended up going for over $100K and I believe the entire pool was over a million dollars. Again, way over my head.

The only game I could play was the Friday game. You would write your name on a dollar (or a few dollars) and put it in a paper bag. At the end of the day they would draw a dollar and that person won all the money. It was always a few thousand dollars. Math told me I’d never win but I like the entry fee. I never won.

I lost my risk aversion there. Like losing your virginity, you really never get it back. You always feel that no matter how much you lose you always can get it back again. Because you see guys blow up and come right back. Of course their personal lives are ruined from all the gambling but financially they get back. I’ve felt like that since the day I left. It’s hurt me many times and its made me a lot of money. It’s driven my wife crazy. To the point I give her the checks from the nursery and I’m not allowed to touch them. I can do whatever I want with the rest. It’s served both of us well. Without her I might living in an apartment alone with a cat. Or in a huge home alone with a cat. As I’ve gotten older my risks are more calculated and my ideas better. My experience and gut has shaken out some incredible opportunities and my risky side has let me go all in and take advantage where others my only dip a toe.

Where I stand now is the needle moving problem. I don’t get excited about $5K but if I lose it I get pissed. That causes financial overextension and you have to be careful. So I try and approach it annually and realize that $5K multiplied is a needle mover. That combined with enjoying the success of others rather than matching them. They have a nice car? Borrow it a few hours and get it out of my system. Beautiful beach house? Go stay in it. I realized t’s almost better to have rich friends than be rich

  1. Interesting article Shane. I like the “I don’t get excited about $5k ” statement. Risks can make us do the unthinkable and when you look back, you realize it takes a lot of guts.I invested heavily last year and looking back now,I just smile at the bargains 😀 and how I pulled it off .Most people don’t have guts so they are still where they are . You learn from experience from every risk you take,so it’s a win win situation the way I see it .

Giving your wife the check is a wise thing 👌as we get too carried away most times

    Well done 👏.
