Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Monday, July 25th, 2022

Last week I flew out to give the eulogy for my Grandmother.  While I have become a decent writer, my translation to speech often isn’t as strong.  I have no issues talking to crowds.  Honestly the bigger the better. It’s much more difficult speaking to a crowd of 5 than a crowd of 5000.  Much more personal.

I used to be super confident in my speech abilities until recently.  I was kindly asked to give the commencement speech for Tuscola High School. My speech was strong.  I didn’t memorize it because honestly it was a bit too long but I rehearsed it over and over.  While it wasn’t going to change any lives, it was pretty good. At least that’s what I thought. My wife as well.  The day of the speech I set up my computer on the stand and had the speech in a good font.  I had researched the page turning so I had that down as well.  I was given the cue to begin my talk and I looked out to the crowd to thank them and introduce myself.  As I looked down I realized that looking out had reset my focus.  I no longer could see the screen without my reading glasses which I didn’t bring because they made me look older. So there I stood.  Hundreds of people and a speech that I kind of knew, but now had long forgotten because of anxiety.  It wasn’t horrible but good was not a word that would be used either. I vowed to never put myself in that position again.

So when asked to give the eulogy I didn’t want to mess it up. I wanted to make my Mom and my Grandmother proud.  I wrote it printed it out in big font and made sure I had a good pair of reading glasses. We arrived at a beautiful cemetery on the beach.  The time came to read the speech.  I pulled my reading glass case out and …

  1. What ever happened to the idea of aging gracefully, why are people so concerned about ‘looking old’ or looking your age?

  2. Hopefully it turned out ok with the huge printed font. You always need a backup pair of readers!

Your story reminded me of the old Twilight zone with Burgess Meredith when all he needed was time to read all of the books – he finally gets it and his glasses break….
