So this month turned out to be the best month in history at the nursery. After all my talk about the recession and the economy we followed up two rough months with an incredible month. The difference? Weather. June was the hottest/driest June in history. It was over 100 degrees 5-6 days and not an ounce of rain. People didn’t want to plant. Home owners or landscapers. After 100s of years we know weather is more important than anything and yet we forgot it because it had been so long since June was taken out for weather. July was essentially the same thing. August weather on the other hand has been as nice as I remember. I tell me wife its been so cool in the morning I feel like I’ve gone on vacation. The weather alone has added several hundred thousand dollars in sales. And plant loss has been greatly reduced because we’ve also received a lot of rain.
To me its a reminder that there are a ton of other things that play into sales besides the overall economy. Your product mix, your pricing. What does your product represent. Is it luxury, a necessity. How are your competitors doing. Our competitors are generally box stores and they raised the white flag and didn’t bring in any plant material since sales sucked for the last two month. So when the weather turned we basically were fully stocked while everyone else had zero. We had a monopoly. That part was planned. We also stay fully stocked because we grow our own material so even though its for fall sales why not put it out and see what happens. What happened is it sold. Well. After 30 years
