Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Friday, June 13th, 2025

I’ve talked about it several times over the last 17 years of posting here but my family is made up of adventurers. We come from a small town in Illinois but for local yocals, my family has seen more of the world than almost any family you’ll meet. The most famous is my Dad’s cousin Quen. He is more like my Uncle because he was my Dad’s age and they hung out quite a bit. Quen left college because he had a dream to sail around the world. Seems like a dream from 1680 but he decided he would do it from landlocked Illinois. So he built a giant trimaran in his backyard. He hadn’t sailed, he hadn’t built a boat. He was in his 20s. Yet he did and he got it to the Illinois River and sailed around the world. This was 50 years ago so he saw islands very few people had ever been to at that time. He wrote a book about it and its amazing

My biggest regret was being young and not getting to hop on a leg of one of his many sailing journeys. Not talking to him and asking about his adventures. I was around him a lot and I was interested in stupid things like sports and girls. Traveling wasn’t my thing. I didn’t have his bug. Now I do and I wish I could talk to him. He died what he loved doing. Sailing. Got caught in a storm that capsized his boat and most of the team died. I read the book over and over and that’s my version of talking to him. There is also a great documentary on PBS about him posted above. Also a good watch if you have the time

We’ll go into my Grandfather in another opening. He was the air version of Quen. Darb as he was known would hop in his plane and head towards Europe and disappear for months on end. Jumping all over the world with his plane. He had a confidence I’ve never seen before or since. He was shot in the temple as a pilot in WW2 and still made it back to base. He had a big hole in his temple from the shot and it made him even cooler. I guess surviving that he figured everything else was easy. Put him and Quen together and you had two of the greatest adventurers Illinois has ever seen. When I started climbing mountains my Grandfather would call me after every trip to see how it was. It was one thing he wished he had done and was happy for me to see the world. I wish I wasn’t getting such a late start but better late than never I guess. I need my wife to retire and a good dog watcher and you might barely see me I’d be traveling so much. These posts from every time zone imaginable. Because that’s what Cultra’s do 😂
