Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Friday, September 19th, 2025

You’ve heard me talk about my cousin who sailed around the world and my grandfather who flew around the world. One analogy they both used to explain the secret to their marriages and success was this: when you set a course, being 1/10 of a percent off doesn’t seem like much at first, but over time you can end up hundreds of miles from your intended destination. A small error in the right direction can become a big problem in the long run.

You and your wife are sailing through life with two boats. Maybe you add another boat when kids come along. If you aren’t on the same path, you will eventually find yourselves in two different ports. That is why many couples drift apart. The person you meet and the person they are 20 years later are not the same, which is natural. You have to adjust course together to stay on track.

This is where pivoting, or tacking in sailing terms, comes in. Thinking that your business, your life, or your partnerships will move in a straight line is naive. In sailing you tack to capture the wind and keep heading toward the goal. It is back and forth, switching directions, adapting while still moving forward. I think about situations the same way. I would love for everything to go perfectly and straight to the goal, but that is not how life works.

In running, injuries happen. In business, financial challenges come. In marriage, there will be arguments. How you tack against the headwinds determines whether you reach your destination or end up far off course.

I find it easier to handle problems when I use analogies. They make issues clearer and less personal. I am not sure if anyone really reads this, though I know NameBio does. That was a perfect example of me tacking to recover from a bad move. 😂

It also reminds me that most people will not tell you the positives. They will only point out the negatives. Those are not the sailing partners you want. You need to talk about both what worked and what did not so you can learn from the good moves and avoid the bad ones. If you are riding with someone who only talks about the bad, get a new sailing partner.
