Domain Spotlight:

Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Friday, September 26th, 2025

Listening to the DNX show with Josh and Todd on X yesterday reminded me of discrepancies in bankroll and finances and the ability to buy and sell. I’ve told this story before but can’t remember if I shared it here.

We had a landscape architect who was also responsible for selling his plans and installations. He was an incredible designer but struggled to sell landscapes over $25K. Under that amount his close rate was excellent, but above it, almost zero. He blamed cost and thought most people couldn’t afford landscapes that high.

We got so busy we hired an extra salesperson to help sell while he focused on design. A salesperson was cheaper than a designer and easier to find. The new salesperson quickly closed a lot of $25K-plus jobs.

It turned out the designer had been a broke college student and was only slowly building his wealth. He couldn’t comprehend that people would spend $100K on a landscape when that was what he had paid for his house. He simply didn’t believe in the value.

Listening to people in the space, I can see the same mindset. Many believe in the value of good names but don’t have the cash or aren’t comfortable spending four or five figures on a domain and waiting for a non-guaranteed sale. They feel fine buying $100 names and waiting, because they don’t have much tied up. Yet I’d bet many own thirty of those names and could have purchased a $3K name instead.

It comes down to comfort level and mindset. Josh has more capital and feels comfortable, even excited, buying four-figure names because he thinks he can sell them for $50K—and he has. Those sales give him the data and confidence to keep going all in.

On the opposite side there is the Unstoppable $4 com sale they had a year and when you get something that cheap you can afford to tackle the low end of the market. The same people who feel comfortable at the high end feel comfortable taking the $4 and buying thousands and doing it at scale. Knowing that 100 names won’t prove your model. It takes thousands. At $10 most seasoned domain investors don’t feel there is much profit in that area. At $4 the risk drops significantly and the chance of profitability goes way up.

In short, its a mindset and a confidence of knowing what you are doing that allows you to chase the highest end of the market. Even when you’re not there yourself financially.
