Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Monday, June 8th, 2026

As you know, I am strongly pro-data center and pro-AI. Across the United States, however, municipalities and local residents are taking increasingly hard stances against them. If you ask the average resident to explain their opposition, their complaints usually boil down to two resource-related issues: data centers simply use too much power and too much water.

Whenever I hear the water argument, the first question I ask people is why they haven’t tried to shut down their local golf courses yet. Only a tiny percentage of the population actually plays golf, yet a single course in the South can easily consume 500,000 to 1 million gallons of water per day, roughly the same amount required by a standard-sized data center. While it is true that massive hyper-scale data centers can use significantly more, there is a fundamental difference in utility: every single person in a community relies on the internet and data infrastructure. It spans far beyond just AI. Golf, by contrast, remains a luxury sport for the wealthy. (Note: I actually love golf and golf courses; I’m just too busy to play).

Power usage is the second major hurdle, but it usually vanishes when you propose a structural alternative. If you ask opponents, “If the data center generated and relied entirely on its own independent power source, would you be okay with it?” the answer is almost always a resounding yes. They will usually say, “Well, if they can do that, they should use it to make my local electricity bill cheaper while they’re at it.”

Ultimately, the anti-AI mindset operates very much like modern politics. People know exactly how they feel, but they rarely have the hard data or factual information required to back up their stance. When they do bring arguments to the table, it is usually third-hand information that has been passed around so many times it lost any semblance of truth weeks ago.

We can see how this plays out in real-time right here on the state level. I live near the Illinois-Indiana border, and Illinois recently lost a major data center project due to the exact local opposition mentioned above. Indiana stepped up and captured the investment in a heartbeat, giving a massive wins for their local community. First, the city receives a guaranteed $10 million annual revenue payment. Second, the facility’s electricity is routed independently, meaning it won’t strain the municipal grid that supplies local homes. Third, the project will generate a massive wave of jobs, both during the initial construction phase and through long-term operational roles. While I don’t have the exact data on their water sourcing yet, the broader economic impact is undeniable: an extra eight-figure injection into a municipal budget pays for a lot of public goods.

This infrastructure battle is really just beginning. For every stubborn city that refuses to host a data center, there are two neighboring towns waiting to take it off their hands. These facilities are going to be built regardless. In the end, the forward-thinking cities that welcome them today are not going to regret the economic windfall tomorrow. Of course, all my opinion
