I’ve told stories over the years about our degenerate gambling at the Board of Trade, and here’s another. This time it was while I was at the Options Exchange. Everyone on the floor played a game called Knockout. One of the computer nerds in one of the pits ran a game that is pretty common now. You get to pick one team a week that you think will win. You can only pick a team once. If they win, you move to the next week. You try to make it all 16 weeks. It sounds easy but it’s tough, especially when you’re down to the 13th best team. Obviously, you try to pick the biggest favorite each week, but there’s a strategy where you save them for the later weeks.
It was $20 to get in, but there were literally thousands of people between the two exchanges. This guy ran the whole thing on a spreadsheet and kept 5 percent for managing it. If you picked the same team twice you were out. He didn’t have time to come find you if you messed up.
My first year, I got down to 4 or 5 people. I was broke as broke can be. I went to the others and asked if they wanted to split the pot. It was like $30K, and that would have been life changing money at the time. Everyone has to agree or it keeps going. Of course, one of the guys was a rich trader and splitting it meant nothing to him. He told me he would buy out my share for $1,000. Typical trader. Hedging a trade. I didn’t take it. And I lost that week. You’d think I would remember what team lost, but I don’t. I also didn’t have the cash to hedge my play with a sports bet like you could now. I was kicking myself for not taking the $1K after.
Every day on the floor there were things like this going on. Each morning, a guy would come around with a trash bag and you would write your name on a dollar bill and put it in the bag. At the end of the trading day, they would draw a name and the winner got it all. No 50/50. All of it. I never won, but every day I felt like the end of the day could be a great day for me. All at the cost of a little old dollar. Gambling addict at its finest.
Quote of the Day: “The markets are the only place where people ride to work in a Rolls Royce to get advice from those who take the subway.” Paul Tudor Jones

Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct.
