Today I am running a 50-mile ultra, so my apologies for a list that is mostly new GoDaddy names and the rest merely pulling off the names that ended Friday. This thing is going to take me 12 hours or so, and I’m pretty sure I will be too exhausted to look through spreadsheets, especially since I have to drive a few hours home.
I’m not sure how it’s going to go, as it’s the farthest I’ve run other than some Backyard Ultras. It also has 8,000 feet of climb, will be raining for the first few hours, and the creeks are high and muddy, and I have 15 or so to cross. I am going to take my time and enjoy it. I know you’d say that sounds like anything but enjoyable. Think: 12 hours in nature, no calls or texts, no news about war, and beautiful rolling hills and the smell of spring. Sounds like a nice day to me.
I’m coming into this with five black toenails already, so not much more damage there. I’m sure I’ll be sore and tired, but I don’t mind that. I also did a few Ironmans for that amount of time, and I was going all out for those 12 hours. It’s a lot more relaxed here. Also, I’m hoping that moving down 8,000 feet in elevation this week will help. I got a lot of advice from Aaron, the AD in DSAD, and I’m so glad I ran the marathon in the mountains with him to learn about when to walk and run, how to eat and fuel, and most importantly, how to enjoy the run. No pressures, just enjoying the ability to continue to do hard things.
Hoping this is merely a test run for a 100-miler and more. I also know it’s a heck of a lot better than killing myself to reach new times in a marathon with 50,000 people. I’d rather smile and laugh with a few hundred.
Again, I apologize for the mid-list, but we’ll be back strong next time.
