Domain Spotlight:

Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Saturday, June 21st

If you ever want to prove the value and lost traffic to the premium dot com, open up the email. I have a domain that’s used in one form or another by over a hundred companies. I know this because when I set a catch-all for the email, I see all the people who think they’re sending messages to the right company but are actually sending them to the dot com.

I’m seeing, and I’m not exaggerating, over $100 million worth of bids and deals come through the inbox. I’ve received so many related to projects on Boeing airplanes that I won’t buy or sell the stock—I feel like I’d be arrested for insider trading. The emails aren’t meant for Boeing, but the wrong address gets looped into the thread, so I get all the reports, updates, and pricing. I delete it all and keep it private, but I’ve learned more about making planes in the past few years than I ever wanted to.

A completely different company is bidding on food delivery into Eastern Europe, and I’ve seen the full negotiations and pricing sent to major supermarkets and distributors. Again, we’re talking contracts worth tens of millions of dollars. One of the people on the thread isn’t getting any of it, and it’s been going on for months. The others are saying things like “Charlie isn’t pulling his weight” and complaining he doesn’t respond to the bids. They’re sending them to me.

Another one I get constantly is the keyword@ gmail.com crowd. That company’s customers keep sending to the dot com by mistake. Nothing juicy there, just another example. Then there are at least five people who have my domain as their backup Gmail address. Anytime they have an issue, I get the emails. I get the “verify this as your recovery email” messages too. They picked a weak backup, and now I’m their tech support.

All this is almost worse than losing traffic. At least traffic goes to Google and maybe ends up in the right place. I don’t offer that luxury. I don’t want anything to do with their emails or their info. I delete it, keep it private, and move on. But it’s still a mess, and just another reason that if you can afford the dot com, you buy it.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.* All names chosen by us. (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
