Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Friday, December 19th, 2025

I believe engineers are the heart of a company. The founding team often needs to include one. At the same time, I have heard horror stories about partnerships where one person handles money or operations and the other is the engineer. In those cases, the engineer starts to feel like they do all the work and slowly begins to hold the company hostage because they control the stack. I have heard this story four or five times now.

When you do not have checks and balances in the engineering department and the other owner is focused on operations and money, they often lack the ability to truly check the work of the developers. Audits are necessary even on small teams, but when you suggest one to a partner, it is taken as a sign of distrust.

I want to be 100% clear that this is not about Travis. We are not a software company and we have nothing to steal. He is the checks and balances. He keeps everything running and is always the voice of reason. These stories come from other people who are much more data or SaaS driven.

Back to the engineer stories. In many of these situations, the engineer eventually lets the other owner know that they are in control and could destroy the business at any time. Not in those words but hints towards it. This usually surfaces during discussions around pay and equity. Obviously not all engineering partners are like this. 99% aren’t. I bring it up because I had a meeting with someone who was having issues with a partner. Having troubles with a partner is all too common. Engineering or not. Partnerships are difficult and must be treated with the same attention and care of a marriage.

The message is checks and balances in tech are incredibly important. Really, checks and balances are important everywhere, but when software is the heart of your company, there need to be multiple keys to the castle. It’s an area that most people don’t know much about or have any ability to check so there needs to be someone who does. It’s not about trust. It’s good business.
