Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Wednesday, March 25th, 2026

I’m going to say Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I wish I would have had it 30 years ago. Every page, I stop and take in all the wisdom. It has made me reflect on so much of my business career of running a retail storefront. One page gives the “I wish I had done that” reaction and another, “I did that often, I guess I was doing some things correctly.”

The basis of 99% of his ideas and actions is things we know but forget or don’t put into practice. If you don’t manage a lot of people or have to provide customer service, you might not get as much out of the book as someone who does. Yet most can be applied to life. Raising kids. Relationships. Being a spouse.

A good story was him working as a busboy at Spago. His towels were sitting under some dishes he didn’t know were unbalanced, and he grabbed a towel, which knocked off a set of dishes. A huge crash, and the entire restaurant stopped. Some even clapped to make fun of it. He felt terrible and embarrassed, and then his manager came up and ripped him to shreds. Told him how stupid he was and how it affected the experience of everyone there.

Will knew he would never do that to anyone. Nobody sets out to break dishes or make mistakes. Even if careless, the intent is usually to save time, do more work, or hurry. The breaking of dishes is the lesson. That moment will keep you from making the same mistake. You can tell from the reaction to an accident that a lesson has already begun. Screaming at someone says more about you than providing a fix. A discussion of “Was there something we did that caused this, because we will fix it?” Always start with, “We want to help prevent this, and I know you’ll do your part as well.” A simple control of temper shows your staff what is important. Incredibly hard in the moment. We’ve all been that person, angry. We’ve all had that employee who makes more mistakes than others. It’s not to say you don’t fire people who aren’t fit or capable of doing a great job. It means you have to know the difference between an accident and someone who does not care. A good manager knows the difference.

This also shows that yelling, in general, is not a good tactic. I used to tell my daughter, “Cursing and a loud voice have their place.” It’s not often, but when used properly, it’s extremely effective. If you never raise your voice and then do, those who know you know that this moment is serious. If you are always yelling, you lose the ability to motivate. Cursing adds great personality to a joke or a comment. Again, you can’t use it very often, but throwing in a curse word adds personality to a story or statement that only those words provide. Save them for those moments.

I could go on and on with the stories. I know I mentioned it before, but I’m double recommending it now 😀
