One of the things I’ve been doing over the last five years is listening to my parents and my father-in-law. Really listening to what’s on their bucket list. I didn’t ask any of them directly what they wanted to do, but I paid attention to what they talked about and the things they wished for.
My mom is easier, since I see her every day and we talk about a lot. I’m probably a little hard on her because I want her to be healthy and live a long time, so I’m always saying, “You need to do this and that.” Of course, one of those things is exercising and eating right. I’m sure I’m not the only son/daughter who’s constantly on their parents about taking care of themselves. I feel bad I’m always on them but fortunately I talk to my friends of the same age and they’re all the same.
One of the things both of us wanted to do was go see the Chelsea Flower Show in London. And that’s where we are. Seeing the show together. I obviously love plants, and she has always wanted to go. We’re both crossing it off our bucket list. I also used it as an excuse to get her moving. I told her, “We’ll have to do a lot of walking, so you better get in shape. I’m not pushing you around in a wheelchair.” I’m not sure she got in shape, but she’s doing her best. And so far, so good. It wipes her out, but I think she’s going to make it. If not I’ll bury her in Chelsea garden which would be a lovely place to visit her grave.
You’ve heard me say it dozens of times. Spend time with your parents and kids, because they won’t always be there. I’ve said before that memories are more valuable than money. They’ll remember your time together. And it’s always funny which parts they remember.
I took my daughter to a Knicks game in New York last week, and afterward we decided to go see the “celebrities” catching their cars outside Madison Square Garden. Fat Joe and the Terror Squad came out, but they just walked home. A crowd of hundreds followed while someone played their music on a boombox. It was such a New York moment and so much fun. My daughter talked about it all week.
That’s my job for the rest of my life. To create good memories. That doesn’t mean stop working hard or living a normal life. It just means making a conscious effort to try new things and see new places. Because I know there will come a day when I can’t. Same with my parents. So I will while I can, until they can’t.
