Out of college I was in between jobs and took a job at Babbages. Some of you may have remembered Babbages. It was THE video game store. I took a job as assistant manager in one of the busiest malls in the US, Woodfield Mall. I took the job during Christmas for two reasons. One, to learn to work retail and learn to handle large amounts of business in a short period of time. And two, I was waiting to join my Dad at the nursery and wanted to keep the money coming in. Oh there was a 3rd. I loved video games and I got a huge discount on them.
I have lots of stories about the 3 months I worked there and I will never forget it. I took a bus, then a train, then a bus to get there. It took 1.5 hrs each way. My new girlfriend, now wife, supported me by giving me rides if she could. She also did look down on me or leave when I went from making great money trading to 15K year. I knew she was the one just by the way she treated me during those times. I learned so much in those 3 months and no doubt my success derived from working there and being forced to do things I didn’t like but needed to learn. But where the story is headed is not what you think. It is about the shrink wrap machine.
Babbages was known for have a VERY liberal return policy. In fact it was pretty much take anything back that wasn’t stolen from the store. If it looked good and worked, you gave a store credit. We would merely re shrink wrap it and put it back on the shelve. Company policy. I could make any game look brand new with that shrink wrap. When I saw how good it looked I began shrink wrapping all my old products and taking it back to stores after a little use. I could make it look like original packaging. I also took all my collectibles and shrink wrapped them. I most likely have the best condition magazines and papers in the world. Every magazine Michael Jordan was ever on is shrink-wrapped to a piece of cardboard. I’m not sure if they grade magazines but if they do I have a ton of 10s in the attic.
I have other stories from the store. So many I could write a few seasons of a sit com from just the 3 months. But none will be more memorable than the shrink wrap machine. Every time my wife blow dries her hair it takes me back.
