Over the weekend I watched Queens Gambit on netflix, a series about a orphaned girl that learns to play chess and eventually goes on to become a grandmaster.
It was a pretty good show, I found myself cheering her on and smiling when she succeeded.
The thing that stuck out the most to me, was that in order to become good at chess you need to do drugs. Drugs so strong that you actually see a chess board on your ceiling while laying in bed, so strong that you play game after game, with yourself, on said ceiling.
I know how to play chess, I mean I know how the pieces are supposed to move, but I’ve never studied the game or employed strategy. If I can get my hands on some of those green and white pills we’ll see what happens.

LOL the drugs comment was so funny to me. So, over the last year I have played thousands and thousands of chess games with the desire to improve at it and learn strategy. I am now about a level 1600 player and started around 800-900. It’s fun, but I’ve started to back off because I began having intense dreams about it every night. I’d literally make a bad move in the dream and wake up annoyed and not be able to fall back asleep.
Also, I feel like to go from 1600 to the 2000+ range would require me to play and study for 5+ hours every day, and I’m just not going to do that.
Is that similar to Checkers?
